About Event
Most travelers come to San Francisco wanting to walk among coast redwoods, and most of them book Muir Woods. This hike does something different: it routes around Muir Woods entirely and takes you into the redwoods of Marin via the trails of Mt. Tamalpais — the mountain that sits behind the famous grove. Same trees, same quiet, same forest cathedral feeling — without the reservation system, the parking lot, or the boardwalk traffic.
A local guide leads the way. The pace is conversational. You walk through fern-thick understory, past creeks, under canopies of two-hundred-foot trees, and out to ridge viewpoints with the Bay, the Pacific, and the city below. Along the way the guide talks about the redwood ecosystem — how the trees pull water out of fog, how they survive fire, why they do not grow much past the California coast — and points out the smaller details you would miss alone.
For travelers who want more than a photo stop and have a half-day to spend, this is the version of the redwood experience to choose.
Highlights:
• Coast redwoods without the Muir Woods crowds
• Local guide narrates the ecosystem as you walk
• Mt. Tamalpais ridge views over the Bay and Pacific

Good to know: moderate fitness — expect a few hours of walking on uneven trails with some elevation. Sturdy walking shoes, layers, daypack, water bottle, sun hat, sunscreen. Trails can be muddy in winter. Cell coverage is patchy in the redwoods.
